What Are “Orthotics”?

Custom-made foot orthotics are just that, custom! A pair of foot orthotics are only right for the person for whom it is made, and they are worn in a shoe instead of the sock liner. In order to make orthotics that are specific to your feet, a podiatrist first takes a mold of your foot. Podiatrists use a variety of methods to take a mold of the feet, including: plaster casting, STS fiberglass slipper socks, foam imprinting, or computer devices. It is important to get a custom orthotic from a podiatric physician, who will provide an appropriate examination.

In a complete and thorough evaluation for a custom orthotic, measurements are taken of the foot, ankle, knee, and hips during a biomechanical exam. Sometimes standing X-rays may also need to be taken to examine the bone structure in detail. Lastly a visual gait analysis is performed by watching the patient walk barefoot back and forth down a hallway. Based on the entire exam, a prescription is formulated to make orthotics to correct any deformities and allow the patient to walk as efficiently as possible.

Of course, there is a time and place to try an off-the-shelf insole. For mild foot pain, shin splints, or pain in the front of your ankle, try getting an insole from a specialty running store, which will provide some good support. An insole of this type should cost about $30-$40. If it’s more than that, just say no!!
